San Francisco is a city full of hidden gems waiting to be explored, and many of them are found outdoors! Among these hidden gems of San Francisco, are the Hidden Garden Steps.

This beautiful mosaic staircase offers a unique experience in the city, and an excellent urban trails choice.

The Hidden Garden Steps are 163 mosaic stairs located in the Inner Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco, and were completed by volunteers in 2013. This beautification project was a great addition to the many hidden staircases of San Francisco, and certainly one to add to your list.

In this guide, you discover the Hidden Garden Steps, including its history, location, and everything else you may want to know before you visit.

History of the Hidden Garden Steps

To fully appreciate the beauty and significance of the Hidden Garden Steps, it is important to understand its origin and evolution.

The project started as a grassroots effort by two local residents, Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher, who envisioned turning a neglected public staircase into a community art project that would showcase the diverse flora and fauna of San Francisco.

With the help of hundreds of volunteers and donors, they created a stunning mosaic stairs mural that spans the 163 steps and depicts a vibrant garden scene, complete with birds, butterfly stairs, flowers, and trees.

The steps pay tribute to the nearby Station 22 fire department, which is located a few blocks down the street. As they depart, they often face 16th Avenue, and the community desired to create something beautiful for them to admire.

This project has brought about a side benefit. Since completion, the trash and graffiti in the area has mostly ceased, as the neighborhood project brought people together in the community.

The stairs were originally built in 1927, and today reflect an array of San Francisco history, plant life, and small wildlife.

Where are the Hidden Garden Steps?

The Hidden Garden Steps are located on 16th Avenue, between Kirkham and Lawton streets, in the Inner Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco.

In order to see the mosaic art, be sure to start at the bottom, and head up the staircase.

While street parking is available, I prefer taking a Lyft. Without a car, you continue on foot to other nearby hidden gems and get picked up in a different location.

Exploring the Hidden Garden Steps

This set of hidden stairs in San Francisco are filled with a variety of garden themed mosaics.

As you ascend you will find art depicting a sea-to-sky design that includes ocean creatures, flowers, and birds. Other sections include local flora and fauna, such as butterflies and poppies.

Further up are celestial designs including sun, moon, and stars. I was totally blown away at the artist’s detailed skills and formatting.

With all the colors, mismatched shapes, there is a little bit of something for everyone to enjoy.

As you make your way up the stairs, you will be surrounded by succulents and a variety of flowers, and be treated to some filtered views of the city.

Once at the top, there are quite a few healthy trees that block a bit of the view, but there is enough clearing to take in the sights of the city.

Prior to descending the steps, be sure to pause and take a breather. Each time, I’ve had to pause a few times along the way, and used it as an excuse not to miss any artwork.

Like any other hike, urban or dirt, it’s always smart to ensure your legs are rested before any downhill. Climbs, hikes, and even walks can all cause tired muscles and possibilities of tripping. So enjoy the break!

Tips for Visiting

The Hidden Garden Steps are a fairly popular attraction and a great way to get outside and explore San Francisco.

It’s best to visit during the week, or early in the morning to avoid crowds.

If you are looking to capture photos of the stairs, the earlier in the day will provide the best lighting. I have been to the steps a few times, and my photos midday are a bit washed out.

Keep in mind, the steps are long and steady, and the steepness can be a bit much for some. But I guess that is a large portion of San Francisco.

Just remember to wear comfortable shoes and take your time.

There are no restrooms or water fountains on site, so be sure to bring water and use the restroom before you visit.

And as always, many of San Francisco’s hidden gems are tucked in neighborhoods. Be respectful to the area, do not leave any trash behind.

Remember to keep loud noises or voices to a minimum, to not disturb the neighbors.

Lastly – respect the artist’s work and time put in to creating this amazing space.  Do not damage any of the mosaics.
